Pregnant Woman Shot In Robbery, Baby Saved
Apr. 23, 1988
KEARNS, Utah (AP) _ A pregnant woman shopping at a video store with her children was shot to death before their eyes during a holdup, but the unborn child she carried was alive Saturday following a Caesarean section delivery.
A gunman who apparently was irate at the small amount of money in the cash register shot Anna Holmes at the base of the skull as he walked out of the store, police said.
''He was demanding more money. The clerk was saying, 'There isn't any more money.' At that point, he turned around and shot her,'' said Lt. Bernard Bailey of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.
He said the gunman pulled the trigger with the comment, ''That'll take care of her.''
No one else was hurt, authorities said.
Mrs. Holmes, 31, of West Valley City, died about 30 minutes after the unprovoked shooting at the Voyager Video store, where she was shopping with her three children.
An infant girl, a few weeks short of full-term, was delivered minutes before Mrs. Holmes' death at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. She remained in critical condition Saturday, a nursing supervisor said.
Witnesses told police the man fled in a large, older model car, although no one actually saw him get into it.
The amount of cash taken in the robbery was undetermined.
In addition to the victim's children, whose ages ranged from 5 to 13, and the clerk, about eight other people witnessed the shooting.
