Yanks' 16-Year-Old Pitches Well
Apr. 20, 1998
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ Ricardo Aramboles made his initial extended spring training start for the New York Yankees' organization, striking out three in two innings Monday against Philadelphia Phillies' minor leaguers.
Aramboles, a 16-year-old Dominican, was given a $1.52 million bonus to sign a minor-league contract with the Yankees in February.
``I thought he looked great,'' Yankees player development vice president Mark Newman said. ``He showed control, command and stuff. That's really special.''
Aramboles, who threw 23 of 36 pitches for strikes, allowed two unearned runs and two hits. He struck out two in the first. An error and botched rundown following a pickoff attempt set up the unearned runs.
The right-hander's fastball consistently was in the low 90s and he displayed good command of his changeup and curveball.
