WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ A winter storm has forced Purdue to postpone its men's basketball Big 10 season opener against No. 16 Minnesota for a second time.

``County officials are asking us to encourage people to stay home, not go out to watch the game,'' said Purdue spokesman Jim Vruggink.

Tippecanoe County was put under a snow emergency Saturday as heavy snows and ice closed major highways.

``It could very well be several weeks down the road before we can reschedule,'' Vruggink said.

Heavy snow and ice stranded the Golden Gophers in Indianapolis. The Minnesota team's status was not immediately available Sunday.
