WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A Worcester mother is facing charges after her 5-year-old son showed up at school covered in bruises and limping.

Chantal Nguyen was released on $1,000 bail after not guilty pleas were entered on her behalf Wednesday to charges including permitting substantial bodily injury to a child and reckless endangerment of a child.

The Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/1MDKvYd ) reports that the boy has been placed in state custody.

The 22-year-old Nguyen was arrested Tuesday after the boy was taken to a hospital when staff at his elementary school noticed his injuries. Police say the boy suffered "significant trauma" to his head, face, arms, legs, buttocks and lower back.

Nguyen told police that the boy's injuries were caused by a male roommate. No one else has been charged in the case.
