Nicaragua Students, Police Clash
Apr. 10, 1999
MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) _ Police opened fire with plastic bullets and tear gas to disperse protesters at the congress building Friday, wounding a half dozen students, according to news reports.
The stone-throwing students demanded the government spend 6 percent of its annual budget to fund state universities.
Friday's clash was similar to street confrontations in July, 1997 over the same issue.
Protesters claimed at least one injury was from a regular rifle bullet, but police denied that.
Presidential spokesman Gilberto Wong accused the leftist Sandinista party of planning the protest.
