MODENA, Italy (AP) _ Tenor Luciano Pavarotti celebrated his 40th anniversary in opera with a star-studded concert Sunday night in his home city of Modena.

Spanish tenor Jose Carreras was among the luminaries who took part in the three-hour concert, but the third of the ``Three Tenors,'' Placido Domingo, canceled at the last minute.

The Italian news agency AGI said Saturday that Domingo sent a note to the Modena theater explaining that surgery would force him to miss the concert.

No details have been given about the nature of the surgery but Domingo also canceled appearances in the coming days in Vienna where he was to have performed Leoncavallo's ``Pagliacci.''

Pavarotti is expected to return to Modena, some 25 miles from Bologna, on May 29 for a concert to raise money for Afghan refugees living in Pakistan.
