Teen Blinded in Fight
Apr. 22, 1998
RICHARDSON, Texas (AP) _ A 16-year-old boy was pinned down and blinded after he went to watch a midnight fight over a girl.
Jason Prickett, a junior high school dropout and reputed gang member, was attacked by a high school varsity wrestler early Sunday, police said. The 16-year-old suspect, whose name was not released, was arrested Monday and put in juvenile custody.
Prickett had gone with a friend who had scheduled a fight with a romantic rival, police Detective Robert Shaw said. Each brought several friends.
``The original fight was between two guys, but the others got involved,'' Shaw said.
When Prickett's friend got the upper hand, his rival's friends attacked and Prickett joined in the melee, swinging a wallet chain, Shaw said.
``They started fighting, and some other guy jumped on my friend, and I jumped in to try to break it up, and they all jumped on me,'' Prickett said.
Beverly Prickett, Prickett's mother, said doctors have told her that her son is legally blind. At best, he may be able to differentiate between dark and light, she said.
``The only damage done to him was deliberately done to his eyes,'' she said. ``This is going to change the rest of his life _ the rest of his life.''
