Female Deputy Is Shot Dead
Mar. 05, 1999
GRANTS, N.M. (AP) _ A handcuffed inmate overpowered a sheriff's deputy who was taking him to prison, killing her and briefly fleeing after forcing another motorist out of his car.
Deputy Kelly Clark was driving inmate Michael Archuleta, 21, who had been convicted of receiving a stolen vehicle and assault with a deadly weapon, when he attacked her Thursday, state police said.
Authorities said Archuleta somehow got through the sliding window of a divider between the patrol car's front and back seats, took the deputy's gun and shot her. The patrol car went out of control, crossed the median and struck a tractor-trailer rig, Capt. Rudy Acosta said.
Archuleta fled after he forced another motorist out of his car. He was caught soon afterward when he stopped to make a phone call at a gas station, still wearing his handcuffs and carrying the gun.
Clark, 39, leaves a teen-age daughter.
