WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Bush on Friday named Laura M. Melillo as deputy press secretary to Marlin Fitzwater and special assistant to the president.

Ms. Melillo, 27, a native of Louisville, Ky., has worked at the White House since 1987. For the past year she has been an assistant press secretary, coordinating the appearance of administration officials on television talk shows.

She succeeds Gary Foster, who joined the Bush campaign staff.
