PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ William & Mary trapped Terrence Stokes' 2-point conversion run with 2:25 left in the game Saturday to preserve a 21-19 victory over Pennsylvania.
Maceo Grant picked up a fumble by Greg Parker at the Quakers' 21 and ran it back 79 yards for a touchdown to pull Penn (2-2) with two points of William & Mary (5-0). But Stokes was stopped at the 3 on the conversion run.
Derek Fitzgerald rushed 22 times for 116 yards and three touchdowns for William & Mary. His second TD, on a 5-yard run with 3:09 left in the second quarter, gave William & Mary a 14-7 lead.
Andy Glockner pulled Penn to within 14-10 on a 43-yard field goal with one second left in the half. Another 43-yarder by Glockner midway through the third quarter brought the Quakers to within one.
James Blocker-Bodley returned a fourth-quarter punt 25 yards to bring the Tribe to midfield. Fitzgerald then capped a four-play, 53-yard drive with a 21-yard run to give William & Mary a 21-13 lead.
William & Mary outrushed Penn 246-110 and held the Quakers' leading rusher, Sundiata Rush, to 32 yards on nine carries.
Fitzgerald opened the scoring on a 1-yard run with 14:08 left in the second quarter. The Quakers tied it midway through the quarter when Jim McGeehan connected with Warren Rosborough on a 5-yard scoring pass.
