Bus With Handicapped Kids Crashes
Nov. 15, 1997
STRONG, Ark. (AP) _ A tractor-trailer and a bus carrying blind and deaf children collided Friday on a rain-slicked highway, killing the truck driver and injuring the six people on the bus.
The two vehicles collided head-on while approaching each other around a curve on U.S. Highway 82 in southern Arkansas. The road was wet from rain throughout the day.
Two children on the bus were treated and released, another was kept overnight at a local hospital and a fourth was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Little Rock. A monitor with the children and the bus driver were also injured.
The bus was taking the children home. They are all students at separate state schools for the blind and deaf.
Troopers were interviewing the injured people Friday night to try to determine the cause of the crash.
The highway was closed in both directions for about four hours after the late afternoon crash.
