MEXICO, Maine (AP) — Police have identified the man who died in an exchange of gunfire after he allegedly stole a pickup truck in Paris and led police on a chase that ended at a convenience store in Mexico, Maine.
State police say 52-year-old Steven R. Piirainen of South Paris was found dead in the vehicle outside the convenience store and gas station late Sunday.
Police say he exchanged gunfire with a state trooper and a Mexico officer, but it was not immediately clear if he was shot by police or if he shot himself.
An autopsy was planned Monday.
No officers were hurt. Trooper Paul Casey and Mexico reserve police officer Dean Benson were both placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice, during the investigation.
