Thirteen Tons of Marijuana Found on Honduran-Registered Ship
Sep. 10, 1988
LONDON (AP) _ A 13-ton stash of marijuana was discovered aboard a Honduran-registered freighter stopped in British waters last week, a customs official said.
''There's tons of it coming out,'' Peter Biles of the Customs and Excise Department said Friday of the discovery on the ship, identified as the Salton Sea. ''It's ... a big pro job.''
Biles said the ship's Dutch captain, three Dutch crewmen and four Colombian crewmen were charged with illegally importing cannabis into Britain and were being held in police custody.
The Honduran-registered ship was captured Sept. 3 after a chase across the English Channel from the northeast coast of France, where it had failed to stop for a routine check by French customs officers.
The French fired two warning shots but the freighter churned off to British waters and finally surrendered to the British coast guard. It was escorted into Ramsgate on the southeast coast of England.
