May. 24, 2004
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) _ Mordechai Vanunu, who revealed Israel's nuclear secrets, attended a court hearing in a civil matter Monday, in his first public appearance since being released from prison last month.
Since his April 21 release, Vanunu has been staying at a Jerusalem church.
Vanunu appeared in the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court to testify in a civil case.
Vanunu was released from an Israeli prison last month after serving an 18-year prison sentence for providing The Sunday Times of London with information and pictures of Israel's nuclear reactor.
Based on the pictures and information provided by Vanunu _ who worked as a technician in the reactor _ experts assessed at the time that Israel has the sixth-largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world.
After his release from prison Vanunu _ a convert to Christianity _ stayed St. George, an Anglican Church in Jerusalem's Old City.
