Council Overrun by Group of Guys Named Ray
Nov. 20, 1991
SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ Is Ray present? Here. Here. Here. Here.
Calling the roll at meetings of the Simpsonville City Council is easy. Four of the six members are named Ray.
''We, the Rays, now have a firm majority on the City Council,'' said Ray Guenthner, the newest Ray, who will take his seat in January.
His fellow Rays are Ray Talley, C. Ray Bagwell and James A. Ray Fowler.
''I don't know - it must be the planets,'' Guenthner said.
The town has a population of 14,880. And it seems most of the Rays have been accounted for. Guenthner said he knows of only one Ray in Simpsonville who isn't on the council. And that Ray apparently couldn't run anyway.
''He works in Simpsonville and lives in Belton, so I don't know if that counts,'' Guenthner said.
The rule of the Rays is relatively new. In 1989 there was only one Ray. By last year there were three on the council.
