LIEVIN, France (AP) _ Three-time world indoor champion Maria Mutola of Mozambique set a world record at 800 meters of 1 minute 56.36 seconds Sunday.

The previous mark was 1:56.40 by Christine Wachtel of East Germany on Feb. 13, 1988.

Mutola, 25, has won the indoor championship in 1993, 1995 and 1997. Last year, she finished second to Cuba's Ana Quirot in the World Outdoor Championships.

Mutola won the world outdoor 800 in 1993 and was a bronze medalist at the distance in the 1996 Olympics.
