LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles police are searching for a person suspected of tampering with a gas line in a Venice neighborhood, causing a gas leak that triggered the evacuation of about 50 homes.

Investigators say the suspect was a former tenant of the building where the leak started Monday.

Hazardous-materials crews and utility workers responded after residents reported smelling gas. Fire officials called for precautionary evacuations and later said no one was injured.

The Los Angeles Times says it took crews about four hours to stop the leak.

It's not clear what motivated the suspect.
