Wrestler Acquitted On Assault Charge
Apr. 17, 1987
PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Professional wrestler Jim ''The Anvil'' Neidhart has been found innocent of charges he punched a flight attendant aboard a USAir jet.
A U.S. District Court jury deliberated 90 minutes Thursday before acquitting Neidhart, 31, of Land O'Lakes, Fla., on charges of assault and interfering with a flight attendant.
The attendant, Ava Winston, testified that Neidhart became angry when she asked him to pay for two beers he ordered aboard a flight from Tampa, Fla., to Pittsburgh on Jan. 15.
She and a co-worker, Stephanie Ziglar, said the 6-foot, 240-pound Neidhart punched Ms. Winston on the arm, then struck her again when she served drinks a second time.
Jerry S. McDevitt, Neidhart's attorney, told the jury Neidhart merely tapped her on the arm to get her attention. Ten witnesses also testified that Neidhart did not punch Ms. Winston.
