NEW YORK (AP) _ John McEnroe, rarely afraid to speak his mind, will now get to sound off in book form. The outspoken tennis star and commentator has signed with Putnam to write his memoirs.

No terms were disclosed but he likely received at least $1 million.

``His autobiography will reveal the very private side of a very public and fascinating figure,'' Stacy Creamer, a vice president and senior editor at Putnam, said Tuesday.

In addition to his tennis career, Creamer said McEnroe will write about his six-year marriage to actress Tatum O'Neal, which ended in 1992.

The memoir, yet to be titled, is scheduled for publication in 2002.
