MANFREDONIA, Italy (AP) _ Hundreds of students and fishermen marched through the streets of this Adriatic port city on Tuesday to protest the planned docking of a freighter bringing back chemical wastes from Nigeria.

The Deep Sea Carrier is one of three ships carrying Italian industrial wastes that the government of Nigeria ordered returned to Italy but that no Italian port wants to accept.

Mayor Matteo Quitadamo of Manfredonia said local authorities will try to block the docking of the Deep Sea Carrier unless the national government announces a plan for the final disposal of the waste elsewhere.

Protests have also taken place in Leghorn and Ravenna, hampering the government's efforts to bring the chemical wastes ashore pending disposal.
