UNH students plan solidarity rally for non-renewed lecturers

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — Students at the University of New Hampshire say they are planning a solidarity rally after the school announced it will not renew nearly 20 lecturer positions.
Last month, UNH officials announced they would not be renewing the contracts of 18 lecturers in the College of Liberal Arts. WMUR-TV reports students are planning an on campus solidarity rally at 11 a.m. Friday, with organizers saying they have invited school administrators and Democratic U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan.
Student Eden Suoth says the rally aims to show the human consequences of the decisions to cut the lecturer positions.
University officials said in a statement no academic programs are being eliminated because of the job cuts, and the university is under increasing budget pressure every year.
