Pa. Couple Sentenced to Death
Nov. 06, 2001
CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) _ A woman and her boyfriend were sentenced to death Monday for killing his ex-girlfriend.
Prosecutors said William Housman, 24, and Beth Ann Markman, 35, plotted to kill Leslie Rae White, a student at Harrisburg Area Community College, because Markman was jealous of her.
Housman lured White, 18, to his Newville trailer on Oct. 4, 2000, by telling her that his father had died. When White arrived, prosecutors said Housman and Markman stuffed pieces of a T-shirt in her mouth and strangled her with stereo wire.
They wrapped the body in a tent and dumped it in the trunk of a junked automobile in Floyd County, Va., authorities said. Police found the body several days later.
Housman and Markman were convicted last week of first-degree murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, theft, unlawful restraint and abuse of a corpse.
The jury announced the death sentences after more than five hours of deliberations.
Housman's lawyer, Hubert Gilroy, said he would appeal.
