MAHWAH, N.J. (AP) — A school bus driver and a student safely escaped when a fire broke out on the bus.

Mahwah fire officials tell NJ.com that the fifth-grade student, the driver's first pickup of the morning, smelled smoke when he boarded the bus around 9 a.m. Tuesday. The boy and the driver quickly got out of the vehicle as the fire started to spread.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which destroyed the bus.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. But officials believe it may have been caused by a mechanical problem in the engine.

The names of the driver and the student were not disclosed. Authorities say they were not injured in the fire.
