MARTIN, Tenn. (AP) _ Tennessee-Martin fired football coach Sam
on Thursday and named defensive line coach Johnny Jernigan interim coach.
The Division I-AA Skyhawks are 2-6 this season, including 0-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference. McCorkle, in his third season at UT-Martin, had an overall record of 5-25.
Athletic director Phil Dane said the firing was based on ``philosophical differences about how the Skyhawk football program should move forward.'' He would not elaborate.
Offensive line coach Blaine McCorkle, son of the head coach, also was fired. Secondary coach Sammy McCorkle will stay on. He is Sam McCorkle's nephew.
Sam McCorkle spent 27 years in coaching, and was head coach at Livingston University in Alabama from 1985-90.
He was an assistant coach at Austin Peay, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Mississippi and North Texas State.
His three-year contract at UT-Martin would have expired in December.
