Baby boy abandoned at South Carolina fire station

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina Department of Human Services says a 9-day-old baby has been abandoned at a fire department.
The Spartanburg Herald-Journal reports that the baby, a white boy, was left at the North Spartanburg Fire Department sometime Sunday evening. A note attached to the child identified him as Josiah, but his last name is unknown.
A South Carolina law says unharmed babies up to 60 days old may be handed over to officials at a designated "safe haven," and the person leaving the infant may do so anonymously.
A hearing about the baby's custody will be held Oct. 15 at the Spartanburg County Courthouse.
