MOSCOW (AP) _ An assailant threw a grenade through the apartment window of the prime minister of Daghestan, an autonomous republic in Russia. The official was not at home but his wife suffered minor injuries, the news agency Tass said.

The attack against Abdurazak Mirzabekov occurred Friday evening in the republic's capital, Makhachkala, the news agency said.

Tass said similar attacks have occurred against members of Mirzabekov's cabinet and the republic's parliament, the trade minister, and the chairmen of city and district executive committees. It was not the first such attack against Mirzabekov, it said.

More than a dozen assassination attempts against politicians in Daghestan were reported in 1991 alone, according to Tass.

Daghestan lies north of the Central Asian republic of Azerbaijan next to the Caspian Sea.
