Jul. 17, 1990
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) _ Bridgette LeAnn Wilson of Oregon topped 50 other teen-agers to earn the Miss Teen USA crown in the eighth annual pageant.
''I went in and I was going to give it my best shot, and whatever my best was, I was going to hope for the best,'' said the blonde, brown-eyed teen after her win Monday.
The 16-year-old from Gold Beach said she hopes for a career in entertainment.
''There are 51 beautiful girls here. I'm a sincere person, and I believe in myself, and having my family here was a help,'' said Wilson, who was crowned by 1989 Miss Teen USA Brandi Sherwood of Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Miss Alaska, Mar La Johnson, 18, of Anchorage was first runner-up, and Miss Georgia, Holly Roehl, 17, of Griffin was second runner-up.
Sandy Duncan and Former Miss Teen finalist Leeza Gibbons, of ''Entertainment This Week,'' were co-hosts of the two-hour pageant held at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and televised nationwide.
Wilson will receive more than $150,000 in cash and prizes, including a car. Contestants competed in interviews, evening gown and swimsuit events. Finalists also competed in an impromptu interview.
Wilson said she was unsure of what her year would include. ''I don't know. This is pretty good so far. If it gets better, I can hardly wait.''
