ATHENS, Greece (AP) _ Police detained more than 350 Iraqi Kurdish and African illegal immigrants found on a deserted beach on Chios Island, located in the Aegean Sea across from Turkey, the Merchant Marine Ministry said Monday.
A boat dropped the group off late Sunday on the island, where they were found by a coast guard patrol. They were taken to a nearby town and given food and shelter.
Tens of thousands from Asia and Eastern Europe sneak into the country each year, hoping to make their way to Greece or other European Union countries.
