Russians Win Tchaikovsky Contest
Jun. 30, 1998
MOSCOW (AP) _ Russian musicians bested an international field and took top honors in piano, violin and cello at the prestigious Tchaikovsky music competition.
The judges gave Denis Matsuyev the prize for the piano, named Nikolai Sachenko the top violinist, and selected Denis Shapovalov in the cello competition Monday night.
``It's not at all surprising that Russian participants won first prizes in a competition which ... is based on the works of Tchaikovsky,'' competition spokesman Andrei Ustinov said today.
Participants are not limited to Peter Tchaikovsky's works, but each performer must include at least one piece of music by the 19th-century Russian composer in each of the competition's three rounds.
Previous winners have included musicians from around the world. One of the most notable was a young American, Van Cliburn, who won the piano prize in 1958 and instantly became one of the world's most famous pianists.
The Tchaikovsky competition has been held every four years since 1958, launching successful careers for many of the winners. The top prize is $10,000, runners-up take home $8,000 and third-place finishers get $6,000.
The runners-up were:
_ In piano, Russia's Vadim Rudenko was second, followed by Britain's Frederick Kampf, Russia's Sergei Tarasov, Russia's Maxim Filippov and Ukraine's Oleg Polyansky.
Special mention diplomas were awarded to Russia's Victoria Korchinskaya-Kogan and Japan's Mica Sato.
_ In cello, Australia's Li Wei Qin received second prize, followed by Russia's Boris Andrianov and France's Francois Salque. No fifth prize was awarded. Sixth was shared by Germany's Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt and Russia's Dmitry Tsirin.
Diplomas were awarded to Russia's Vladimir Balshin and Alexander Neustroyev.
_ In violin, Germany's Latica Honda-Rosenberg was second, followed by China's Yigiong Pan, China's Bin Huang, Russia's Alexander Trostyansky and Britain's Natasha Lomeiko.
Diplomas were awarded to Italy's Francesco Manara and Russia's Yelena Revich.
The winner in the vocal competition was to be chosen today.
