HOUSTON (AP) _ A man who took his high-school sweetheart hostage at her workplace killed her and himself after two hours of talking with hostage negotiators.
Daniel Gonzalez Jr., 27, killed ex-girlfriend Maria Eugenia Escobedo, 26, in a conference room in the offices of Meridian Oil Inc.
The woman agreed to talk with him in the conference room Wednesday against the advice of her boss, who suggested they call security. Moments after the couple entered the room, Escobedo screamed and her boss saw Gonzalez holding a gun to her head.
Negotiators talked with Gonzalez on the phone until they heard gunshots and police decided to storm the building.
They found Gonzalez dead and Escobedo with two chest wounds. She died en route to a hospital.
A homicide investigator said Gonzales had been harassing Escobedo for two weeks. She was so afraid that she had a security guard escort her to her car each night, police said.
