NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — A South Hadley man who pleaded guilty to being drunk when he crashed his car and killed the man he called "the best friend I ever had" has been sentenced to 2 ½ years in jail.

Mark Ducharme was also sentenced Thursday in Hampshire Superior Court to five years of probation.

The 46-year-old Ducharme pleaded guilty to manslaughter and negligent motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of alcohol.

Prosecutors say Ducharme's blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit to drive when he crashed his Porsche on June 14, killing his passenger, 62-year-old Wesley Schutt.

The pair was out to get more ice for Ducharme's stepdaughter's graduation party.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette (http://bit.ly/1CXYsZc ) reports that Ducharme choked back tears as he apologized to Schutt's family.
