NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Bobby April, the special teams coach for the New Orleans Saints since 1995, will not be returning to that position.

The Saints' new coach, Jim Haslett, offered April a spot on his staff, but April declined. April was fired along with head coach Mike Ditka and the other New Orleans on Jan 5.

April will continue to draw his salary for another year, and said he wants to use that time to be with his wife and five children.

He was the special teams coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1994-95, and as the tight ends-special teams coach for the Atlanta Falcons from 1991-93.

Prior to entering the NFL, April spent 13 years as a college assistant. When he returns to coaching, April said he hopes to become a college head coach.
