SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) _ A tornado swept through a southern Bulgarian village, injuring four people and leaving hundreds without shelter, officials reported Sunday.
The tornado hit the village of Zhaltusha, in an isolated, mountainous region 190 miles southeast of Sofia late Saturday, severing power lines, lifting the roofs off 15 houses, and blowing roof tiles off 300 other homes, civil defense officials said.
About 1,000 of the village's 1,700 people were homeless and evacuated to nearby villages.
Ivan Tsonevski, a meteorologist from Bulgaria's Academy of Science, said the tornado built up under thick thunderstorm clouds in the area.
