Thirty Cars Collide in Moscow
May. 25, 2000
MOSCOW (AP) _ A 30-car pileup in early morning fog outside Moscow killed two people and injured nine others Thursday.
The 6:30 a.m. accident involved traffic headed into the city along the Leningradskoye Highway near the suburb of Solnechnogorsk, about 45 miles from the city, said Tatiana Agapova, spokeswoman for the Moscow regional traffic police.
TV reports showed rescuers trying to remove victims from crumpled cars and trucks, and drivers saying that smoke from a peat fire had hampered visibility in the area, in addition to the fog.
Car ownership in Moscow and the surrounding region has soared in recent years, contributing to heavy rush hours, traffic jams and accidents.
