May. 18, 1999
ATLANTA (AP) _ Walt Weiss hit a two-run single in the seventh inning and Kevin Millwood pitched seven strong innings as the Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Monday night.
Millwood (3-3) gave up only four hits and one run. In his last four starts _ a span of 26 2-3 innings _ Millwood has compiled a 1.69 earned run average.
John Rocker pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save.
Pirates starter Todd Ritchie (2-3) rebounded from a poor start, limiting the Braves to six hits and three walks over seven innings. Ritchie lasted only 3 1-3 innings in a 19-8 loss at Houston on May 11, giving up five earned runs and seven hits.
The Braves entered the game having lost four of their last five and six of their last eight. Before Weiss' hit, the Braves were hitting .206 (29-for-141) with two outs and runners in scoring position _ including a bases-loaded strikeout by Javy Lopez in the fifth.
The Pirates, who had their three-game winning streak snapped, took a 1-0 lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Jason Kendall.
Notes: Millwood has a 3-0 career record against the Pirates. ... The Braves placed starter John Smoltz on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow ... Atlanta's Chipper Jones got a single in the eighth but continues to struggle. He has only nine hits in his last 50 at-bats.
