NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A woman has been sentenced to 20 to 40 years after pleading guilty but mentally ill in stabbing death of her mother last summer near Philadelphia.

The (Pottstown) Mercury reports that 22-year-old Elena House-Hay choked down tears as she entered the plea Wednesday to the third-degree homicide charge.

Police responding in July to a 911 call from a Limerick Township home found 54-year-old Annette House in a second-floor bedroom with multiple stab wounds.

Authorities in Montgomery County said she acknowledged that the two had fought earlier over her mental health treatment, and she sent a friend a message saying "Haha, I hate my family."

A person found guilty but mentally ill is initially incarcerated in a mental institution and following treatment must serve the balance of any sentence in prison.
