RALEIGH — Civil rights groups in North Carolina vow to fight proposals to require voters to show identification before casting ballots and to allow towns to operate charter schools within larger school districts. The North Carolina NAACP said both proposals are meant to roll the state back to the time before the civil rights movement and is threatening to sue. UPCOMING: 350 words by 5 p.m.
ATLANTA — Dorothy Cotton, who worked closely with The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., taught nonviolence to demonstrators before civil rights marches and sometimes calmed tensions by singing church hymns, has died. She was 88. Cotton died Sunday afternoon at the Kendal at Ithaca retirement community in New York, said Jared Harrison, a close friend who was at her bedside.
