Woman, 5 Children Presumed Dead After Fire
Nov. 10, 1993
ST. JAMES, Minn. (AP) _ Fire swept through a downtown building housing businesses and apartments early today, and authorities said a woman and five children were missing and presumed dead.
Firefighters worked for two hours to bring the blaze under control after it broke out about 1:30 a.m., said St. James Police Chief Donavon Mickelson.
The dead were believed to be a 22-year-old woman and five of her children, all age 7 or under. Mickelson said authorities are ''quite sure'' the six are dead, but their bodies had not been recovered because of the condition of the wreckage.
The fire gutted the building, which housed three apartments above ground- floor businesses. Five people in another apartment - a man, a pregnant woman and their three children - were treated and released from Watonwan County Hospital.
The state fire marshal was on the scene investigating the fire.
St. James is a town of 4,300 in south-central Minnesota.
