One Dead in Mexico Landslide
Aug. 31, 2000
POZO COLORADO, Mexico (AP) _ A landslide on a highway under construction in southern Chiapas state killed one person and briefly buried two others.
Workers were preparing to detonate dynamite on a section of highway six miles west of the city of San Cristobal de las Casas when the landslide occurred, officials said.
Construction worker Eliaquin Toala said rain caused the landslide.
``When it began someone screamed, `Watch out!' and just then I saw that a mountain of rocks was falling down on top of us,'' he said.
Red Cross workers rescued three people from beneath the rubble of rocks and earth. One, Mariano Ruiz Lopez, 45, did not survive.
