DANVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A suburban Indianapolis man faces felony charges stemming from the November death of his girlfriend's 4-year-old son.
Twenty-three-year-old Michael P. Atkinson of Danville was charged Wednesday with neglect of a dependent causing death and aggravated battery.
Danville police and firefighters responded Nov. 11 to a call about an unconscious boy in the town just west of Indianapolis. He died Nov. 13 at an Indianapolis hospital.
Police say a medical examiner ruled the death a homicide and found that the boy had died from blunt-force trauma.
Danville police said in a statement that the department is "deeply saddened" by the boy's death. Authorities have not released the child's name.
Atkinson remained Thursday in the Hendricks County Jail and online records don't list an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
