MEXICO CITY (AP) _ Olympic weightlifting champion Soraya Jimenez of Mexico tested positive for a banned stimulant during the Pan American championships last month in Venezuela.
Jimenez, the first woman to win an gold medal for Mexico at the Olympics, could be barred from competing in Mexican and international weightlifting events for at least six months, according to Martha Isela Elizondo, president of Mexico's Weightlifting Federation.
Officials were waiting for the results of a more definitive test, expected in a few days. Jimenez refused to comment on the test results.
Jimenez won gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the first gold for Mexico since 1984. She also won four gold medals and two silver medals at last month's championships.
