Reds Offer Wohlers Arbitration
Dec. 07, 2000
CINCINNATI (AP) _ The Cincinnati Reds offered salary arbitration to pitcher Mark Wohlers on Thursday but not to catcher Benito Santiago, who apparently must seek a new team for next season.
Wohlers, 30, was 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 20 appearances with the Reds. He also had 20 minor league appearances as he continued to try to overcome control problems that have plagued him since he was injured in 1998.
His Aug. 11 win at Chicago was his first since Sept. 4, 1997, when he was with Atlanta.
Wohlers, like Santiago a free agent, has until Dec. 19 to accept or reject the offer and can negotiate with the Reds through Jan. 8. The Reds already have nine players eligible for arbitration.
Santiago, 35, hit .262 with eight home runs and 45 RBIs last season. He cannot re-sign with the Reds after Thursday until May 1.
