HOUSTON (AP) _ Lou Piniella, fired recently as manager of the New York Yankees, has interviewed for the vacant Houston Astros' managing job.

Piniella met with Astros general manager Bill Wood Tuesday night and Wood confirmed the meeting to the Houston Chronicle.

Piniella remains under a personal services contract with the Yankees through the 1991 season.

Piniella served two terms as manager of the Yankees and was the general manager for part of the 1988 season.

The Astros have been seeking a new manager since owner John McMullen fired Hal Lanier at the close of a disappointing 1988 season.

Astros coach Matt Galante and Texas Rangers coach and former Astros player Art Howe also have interviewed for the job.

Piniella played for and coached under Yogi Berra, a close friend and currently an Astros' coach.
