CHICAGO (AP) _ The city has squashed plans for a free summer concert by the hometown Smashing Pumpkins.

City officials said the show, planned for July 7 at Grant Park, would probably attract 100,000 people _ twice as many as the lakefront park could hold safely.

``It's one of the biggest heartbreaks I've ever had in my life,'' singer and guitarist Billy Corgan said.

Following the cancellation, Soldier Field, one of the few venues that could handle the crowd, apparently was unavailable on such short notice, Corgan said. July 7 is the Chicago band's 10th anniversary.
