PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A former North Providence police officer has been released from prison after serving nine years of a 20-year sentence for taking part in a large burglary ring.

A spokesperson for the Rhode Island Department of Corrections tells WPRI-TV that Michael Ciresi was released on parole Wednesday afternoon.

Ciresi was convicted in 2008 on nine charges including burglary and harboring a criminal. Police say he robbed homes in Pawtucket and North Providence.

Ciresi had requested early release in 2014, but was denied.

The Rhode Island Parole Board said his parole was unanimously approved Sept. 6.
