Jun. 08, 2001
IDUKKI, India (AP) _ Electricity department officials surveying power lines in southern India said Friday that four wild elephants _ including one baby _ were electrocuted.
The elephants' bodies were found Thursday in the Chorakakki forest in Kerala state's Idukki district.
Officials with the Kerala State Electricity Board said the elephants, three females and a baby, may have died after touching a low power line.
The bodies of two of the elephants and the baby were lying together in one place, an official said on condition of anonymity. The third adult was lying a few paces away. Bushes and plants in the area were charred.
Four elephants were electrocuted in 1997 in the same forest area.
