FRENCHVILLE, Maine (AP) _ A dog dragged home the body of a baby girl who apparently was left in a gravel pit after birth, authorities said today.

Investigators from the Maine State Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were trying to trace a young couple seen in Madawaska, along the Canadian border, on Saturday. People who saw the couple said the woman ''appeared to be quite ill and having some problems,'' said state police Sgt. Charles Love.

An autopsy today was expected to determine whether the baby was born alive.

The body was found near a house Saturday, and police dogs led investiators to the gravel pit, which showed evidence of childbirth.
