PLEASANTON, Texas (AP) _ Three law officers and a suspect were killed Tuesday night in a battle that reportedly began when officers tried to serve an arrest warrant for a probation violation.

Two other officers were wounded, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange said.

``We have three law enforcement dead, two law enforcement injured and the suspect is dead,'' she said.

The shooting took place in a rural area about 25 miles south of San Antonio, authorities said. Other information wasn't immediately available.

Gunfire erupted as officers tried to serve an arrest warrant for probation violation, television station KSAT reported. The fugitive, believed to be armed with a high-powered rifle, escaped into a wooded area.

It was not immediately known whether the suspect was slain by officers or committed suicide.
