HIV-Positive Man Gets 90 Years For Sexually Assaulting Step-Grandson
Feb. 02, 1996
WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) _ An HIV-positive man who sexually assaulted his step-grandson was sentenced to 90 years in prison Thursday for assault with intent to murder.
``What you've done is horrific beyond description ... You've robbed this young man of his childhood,'' Carroll County Circuit Judge Raymond Beck said. ``You made him your sex slave.''
The 47-year-old man was convicted of assaulting the 8-year-old boy in 1994 on several occasions, and forcing the boy's younger brother to watch.
In a questionnaire asking what should be done to the defendant, the boy marked ``go to jail,'' then wrote ``electric chair.''
Defense attorney Mark Van Bavel said his client maintains his innocence, and would appeal.
The boy has twice tested negative for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
The Associated Press is withholding the man's name to protect the identity of the victim.
It was only the second time in Maryland that a defendant has been convicted for knowingly exposing a victim to the HIV virus, attorneys said.
