Aug. 26, 1998
YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) _ Muscles Yankee, who won the Hambletonian in near-record time, has been established the 3-5 favorite from the No. 7 post position in Saturday's $319,725 Yonkers Trot, the second leg of trotting's Triple Crown.
The 3-year-old bay colt by Valley Victory will be driven by Hall of Famer John Campbell, who guided Muscles Yankee to a 1:52 2-5 triumph _ one-fifth of a second off the stakes record _ in the $1 million Hambletonian.
Muscles Yankee is attempting to become the first trotting Triple Crown winner since Super Bowl accomplished the feat in 1972. The third leg is the Kentucky Futurity Oct. 9 at The red Mile in Lexington, Ky.
Trade Balance, with driver-trainer David Wade, is the 5-1 second choice from the No. 5 hole in the eight-horse race on the half-mile track. Indurain, which drew the rail, is the third pick at 6-1 with Walter Case Jr., the leading driver at Yonkers Raceway.
Muscles Yankee, which earned $500,000 in taking the Hambletonian, carries a 5-1-0 record after six races with earnings of $783,750 into the Yonkers Trot.
``I would have preferred him getting a couple of positions closer to the rail,'' said Campbell. ``However, I'm not too concerned.
``Muscles Yankee is well rested and ready to go. He hasn't races since the Hambletonian, so I'm expecting good things again.''
